Walking the Highline & Celebrating Gay Pride NYC

Hello Everyone and Welcome back to Merick's Corner. This week on the corner we are walking the highline and celebrating gay pride and marriage equality.

The High Line was built in the 1930s, as part of a massive public-private infrastructure project called the West Side Improvement. It lifted freight traffic 30 feet in the air, removing dangerous trains from the streets of Manhattan's largest industrial district. No trains have run on the High Line since 1980. Friends of the High Line, a community-based non-profit group, formed in 1999 when the historic structure was under threat of demolition. Friends of the High Line works in partnership with the City of New York to preserve and maintain the structure as an elevated public park.

The High Line's planting design is inspired by the self-seeded landscape that grew on the out-of-use elevated rail tracks during the 25 years after trains stopped running. The species of perennials, grasses, shrubs and trees were chosen for their hardiness, sustainability, and textural and color variation, with a focus on native species. Many of the species that originally grew on the High Line's rail bed are incorporated into the park's landscape

The design of the High Line's landscape also emphasizes a diversity in bloom time, with plants blooming from late January to mid-November.

The project gained the City's support in 2002. The High Line south of 30th Street was donated to the City by CSX Transportation Inc. in 2005. The design team of landscape architects James Corner Field Operations, with architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro, created the High Line's public landscape with guidance from a diverse community of High Line supporters. Construction on the park began in 2006. The first section, from Gansevoort Street to West 20th Street, opened June 9, 2009. The second section, from West 20th Street to West 30th Street, is projected to open in spring, 2011.

The High Line is open from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM daily. Last entrance to the park is at 10:45 PM.

Hello Merick's Corner.... Hello New York City... Hello NYC Pride...Hello Marriage Equality!!!!
The New York  State Senate voted to legalize same-sex marriage, participants in New York’s 42nd annual gay-pride parade on Sunday came to shout, dance, cheer, strut, hug, and shed tears of joy, knowing that on July 24, when the law takes effect, the season for tears will begin in earnest.
It was a noisy, and jubilant, day in the West Village.
Much of the cheering was aimed at Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, a Democrat, who made legalization of same-sex marriage a part of his election campaign and then led the fight for its approval in the Republican-controlled Senate.
This is bigger than any of us imagine. We here at the corner have been preaching about Positive Change in the world... and i personally feel New York has taken a step in the right direction.. The old saying goes like this;  so goes Merick's Corner... so goes New York... and so goes the USA and the world.... I believe all people should have equal rights to love and to grow into the best person that they can be... hooray New York and my hope is this... if you are reading this from somewhere else in the world that.. not because your gay... but if your black.. white.. asian... middle eastern.. christian.. muslim.. jewish or what ever you maybe or different from your fellow man that your society will embrace you for who you are..... its ok to be different .. its ok to be you.... because you are different this is why it so great to live in our world... stop the hate ... and feel the love.. the joy..... and may you realized that your dreams will come through one day... for a free country and a free world....
