Europe 2011: Croatia & Hungary

Hello Everyone and Happy New Year 2012... This is our last of our travels from 2011 and we are already looking forward to travels in 2012 and beyond... So our focus from Europe 2011 showcase the beautiful countries of Croatia & Hungary.  Merick's Corner travel to Dubrovnik... Take a read and look at the pictures and now you know why Dubrovnik is one of the world most beautiful cities.

 Dubrovnik, the centre of the southernmost region of Dalmatia and its most famous representative, is also the star on the front pages of many prestigious world magazines, as well as being at the very top of the scale of the most beautiful cities of the world. Year on year it is proving itself as a source of inspiration for artists, a venue favoured by members of royal families and the jet setters of the world. It belongs to them, but no more than it belongs to all those who came but once. It is quite simple really, one encounter is enough for those fine threads between you and this glorious city to be spun to last…

"Those who seek paradise on Earth must come to Dubrovnik”, Sowrote George Bernard Shaw, smitten by the beauty of the city whose untouched,1940 m long defensive walls - today under the protection of UNESCO - girdle in a city which carries the appellation ofthe Pearl of the Adriatic. Sitting at the southernmost part of Croatia, harbouring centuries of heritage created by thenoble skills of the finest builders and artists,Dubrovnik basks in a warm Mediterranean climate with groves of lemon,orange and tangerine trees, sumptuous palms and agaves, adorned by Renaissance  parks and the flowering gardens of medieval stone palaces and unobtrusive monasteries.

So we venture from beautiful Croatia to the Country of Hungary... There is so much to do in Hungary... I was in budapest for lay over flight and I decided to make the best of it...So here is a little about Budapest..

Often described as the "Little Paris of Middle Europe", Budapest is famous not only for the monuments reflecting its own 1,000-year-old culture, but also for the relics of others who settled here. Remains from both Roman occupation and much later ruled by the Turks can still be seen in the city. After the Ottoman Empire the union with Austria has a particular influence on the city's form and style.

The capital has two sides, Buda and Pest, stretching along the banks of the Danube, representing two different characters of the city.

Suburban Buda and its historic castle district offer medieval streets and houses, museums, caves and Roman ruins. The dynamic Pest side boasts the largest parliament building in Europe, riverside promenades, flea markets, bookstores, antique stores and café houses.

Budapest has a lot to offer. Museums and galleries, churches and synagogues, palaces and historic buildings, baths and pools are presented together with the influence of Secession in the city.

There is an unmistakable feeling that something out of the ordinary is just around the corner, but what it will be is up to you to find out...

I love this final picture of me in Hungary.... it really enlighten's us why we at the corner love to travel all year long...Well remember its not the journey.. but the destination that will always take us there... So in 2012 we are on the road discovering America as well for sure we are back in Europe for 2012... Where we go...nobody knows... But if you have any suggestions please let us know... Europe 2011--Rome

Hello Everyone and welcome to Merick's Corner Europe 2011: Rome.. This is a little bit of Rome, over 2500 Photos were taken in Rome...So let us begin:

Rome's history spans two and a half thousand years. It was the capital city of the Roman Kingdom, the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire, which was the dominant power in Western Europe and the lands bordering the Mediterranean for over seven hundred years from the 1st century BC until the 7th century AD. Since the 1st century AD Rome has been the seat of the Papacy and, after the end of Byzatine domination, in the 8th century it became the capital of the Papal State, which lasted until 1870. In 1871 Rome became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy, and in 1946 that of the Italian Republic.

A candle was light for all my friends who have lost someone in 2011... A special candle was lit for  my friend Antonio Maione  (2006) and Kevin Foster (2002) and for Sean & Jenn Kelly who lost both their father's in 2011.... and for Damir who lost his Mother and my other friend Jean-Louis who lost his Mom as well.... May the Departed forever R.I.P
